Halloween mainly consists of little ones dressed up as their favorite princess or their favorite superhero, knocking on neighborhood homes and asking for treats. It is pretty much the same thing year after year. However, there are places that go all out for Halloween. Here are some of the best places to celebrate Halloween in the United States.

Salem, Massachusetts

You more than likely have heard the stories about the Salem Witch Trials. In 1692, 20 people were executed after the trials who were thought to be involved in witchcraft. Each year, Salem celebrates Halloween in a huge way. In fact, they have fun and activities that take place all month long in October. These activities feature live re-enactments of the witch trials, pumpkin carving contest and a grand parade. On Halloween night, the town hosts a haunted cruise and costume balls. While in Salem, you can visit the Witch House Museum, the only building that still has ties to the witch trials.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a great place to visit any time of year, especially on Halloween. It has been said that several ghosts from the past still haunt the city today, so take a haunted mansion tour to learn about them and their history. If you want a special blessing or maybe you want to put a curse on someone you don’t like much, visit the voodoo witch doctors. The New Orleans Zoo features its annual Boo at the Zoo Night for families. When the sun goes down, take a tour of Manchac Swamp, AKA The Haunted Swamp. One of the swamp’s residents is Julie White, a voodoo priestess. She died in 1915 and before her death, she told everyone she would die and take everyone with her. The day she died, a hurricane tore through the area, killing hundreds of people, most who were at her funeral.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is one of the most popular Halloween destinations in the United States. There are two main reasons for this: the Eastern State Penitentiary and the Pennhurst Asylum. The Eastern State Penitentiary was built in 1829 and was abandoned in 1971. It was the home to famous criminals like Willie Sutton and Al Capone. The prison was designed to reform criminals through solitary confinement. The building is now in ruins and serves as an attraction where the public can visit the pained former prisoners that haunt the halls today. The Pennhurst Asylum was a home for the mentally and physically disabled. It was opened in 1908 but closed in 1986, because of reports of abuse on the patients. The site is now a hospital-themed walk thru attraction that combines motivated actors and high tech animatronics with items and artifacts that were originally part of the school. Throughout the years, several paranormal investigative teams have been to the site and have reported unexplained objects moving, temperature changes and audible recordings.
